Douglas Gathitu

Douglas Gathitu

Douglas is an Aquatic Biologist and volunteer at Freshwater Guardians, bringing hands-on skills in aquatic macroinvertebrate work, including identification, dissection, and gut-content slide preparation developed over 4 years at the National Museums of Kenya while working on the Mara River Project, which investigated wildlife-derived nutrient subsidies and trophic cascades in large African river systems.

Douglas is also skilled in cataloging and geo-referencing specimen and biodiversity data, supporting FGO's data and mapping efforts toward freshwater ecosystem protection. In addition to his technical research skills, he brings teaching and lab instruction experience at Turkana University College, which positions him to help train communities, CBOs, and Water Guard champions in biomonitoring techniques.

Douglas holds a BSc in Botany/Zoology from the University of Nairobi and is currently attached to the School of Science and Technology at Turkana University College, where he supports students in the laboratory and serves as an administrative assistant in the Offices of the Registrar (Administration), Deputy Principal, and Examinations. He is passionate about integrating rigorous science with community-driven freshwater stewardship.
